Heard It Here First
I'm
here to talk about six teams that are going to disrupt
the preseason rankings and surprise the hell out of
the big time teams and conferences everywhere. Memphis,
Wisconsin, Kansas State, Auburn,
Maryland and Texas might not be on anybody's
top five lists, most won't even crack the top 10, with
one that won't even start out the season in the top
25. But don't hesitate to put your money on these six
squads. Anyone can tell you that Oklahoma, USC,
Miami, and FSU are going to win games,
but with spreads that stretch over five touchdowns,
where's the money in that? Listen closely, and stack
the odds in your favor. Bet on these teams to win and
you won't catch yourself kicking your TV off its stand
because Oklahoma didn't beat Texas A&M
by the 42 point spread.
(Rankings are from the Associated Press as of September
2)

Texas (7)
I know what you're thinking, Texas isn't much of a sleeper,
and you're right, they aren't, but I'm here to tell
you they'll beat Oklahoma this year. Last year shook
Oklahoma's invincibility tag and Texas is about to cash
in. The superstar that was the face of Texas football,
Roy Williams, is now playing for the Detroit Lions.
This said, the Longhorns obviously lost something with
Williams' departure and will be looking for their youngsters
to step up. Now they will have to ride their running
game even more and get back to tricking the defense
with deep play action. Young receivers Tony Jeffery
and Eric Enard will make big plays. With star running
back Cedric Benson striving toward his fourth consecutive
1000 yard season and super athlete Vince Young starting
for his first full year at quarterback, the team should
have defenses sticking eight men in the box. Benson
put a smile on Coach Mack Brown's face when he played
football in the spring instead of minor league baseball.
Young is coming off a season when he rushed and passed
for 1000 yards. With Benson and Young running rapid,
receivers will be sure to find room to make big plays.
If Young doesn't get things done, the Longhorns will
put their hopes on Chance Mock, a senior quarterback.
The defense, which is always strong, will have to make
up for the loss of all-league defensive players Marcus
Tubbs and Nathan Vasher, but they'll find a way. Texas
has a knack for making stars out of no-name players.
Take Texas in the Oklahoma game on October 9th, they'll
be underdogs and they'll get the victory.
